IN DETAIL

Retail interiors that make people stop, look and stay

A shop has only a few seconds to explain itself to someone walking past. The facade, the lighting, the first display and the way the floor invites movement all communicate before a single product is touched. Retail interior design for shops and showrooms is therefore a mix of visual design and commercial thinking: how to attract attention, guide customers and make buying easy.

Aatish Joshi designs stores, boutiques, showrooms and service counters with this balance in mind, keeping the products as the hero and the interior as a supportive stage.

Starting with the product and the customer

A jewellery showroom, a mobile store, an apparel boutique and a furniture gallery have very different needs. We begin with what is sold, how much stock must be visible, how customers prefer to browse and how much assisted selling takes place. A premium product often needs fewer, better-lit displays and more breathing space; a high-volume store needs efficient shelving, clear pricing zones and a fast billing area.

Facade, entrance and first impression

The storefront is the most important advertisement a shop has. We look at signage visibility, entrance width, glazing, lighting at dusk and how the facade sits against its neighbours on the street or in the mall. A well-proportioned entrance with a clear view into the store invites footfall without shouting.

Layout, flow and display

Inside, the plan guides the customer in a natural path. Typical elements include:

  • Focal display at the entry that sets the tone
  • Primary and secondary circulation paths with comfortable widths
  • Wall displays, island units and shelving suited to the stock
  • Trial rooms, seating or consultation corners where relevant
  • Billing and packing counter placed for efficiency and security
  • Storage and back-of-house areas that keep the shop floor clean

Lighting that sells

Retail lighting does more than illuminate. Accent lights highlight products, warm and cool tones are chosen for the merchandise, and glare on glass or polished surfaces is controlled. Ceiling design, track lighting and concealed profiles are planned along with the electrical layout so that the effect looks intentional and is easy to maintain.

Materials that survive heavy use

Retail interiors take a lot of wear from customers, trolleys, stock movement and cleaning. Flooring, laminates, counters and fixtures are chosen to resist scratches, stains and edge damage while still supporting the brand. Modular fixtures can make seasonal changes easier and keep costs under control.

Mall units, standalone shops and showrooms

Mall units come with landlord guidelines on facade, lighting and timelines, while standalone shops offer more freedom but need more attention to the street presence. We work within these conditions and coordinate with the relevant parties as agreed in the project scope.

If you are opening or refreshing a store, share the carpet area, the product category and your target opening date to begin a conversation.

Shops & Showrooms: what to expect, step by step

This guide explains how shops & showrooms works with Aatish Joshi, from the first conversation to the final handover, so you know what you will receive and what decisions come when.

Who this is for

This service is meant for retailers and brand owners who want a store that attracts walk-ins and displays products well. Every space has its own constraints, whether a fixed floor plan, a tight budget, a family routine or a business workflow, and good design begins by respecting them. With 18 years of experience across homes, offices and commercial spaces, the studio focuses on solutions that look refined and still work on an ordinary Tuesday.

What you receive

  • Customer flow and display planning
  • Storefront and signage direction
  • Counter, shelving and fixture design
  • Retail lighting concept
  • Material and finish selection for heavy daily use

The exact deliverables are confirmed in writing after the brief, so scope and responsibilities are clear on both sides.

How the work unfolds

  1. Discovery conversation to understand your needs, property, priorities and budget range.
  2. Site measurement and study of the existing conditions, constraints and opportunities.
  3. Concept direction covering layout, mood, materials and the overall design language.
  4. Detailed design with drawings, finishes, lighting and, where required, 3D views.
  5. Review and revision so decisions are settled before work begins on site.
  6. Execution support and coordination, with a final review at handover.

Planning, budget and timelines

Good planning prevents most expensive surprises. Decisions on layout, services, storage and finishes are best made before site work starts, because changing them later costs both time and money. Where choices have budget impact, options are explained so you can decide with full information.

No two projects are the same, so fees, timelines and execution responsibilities are agreed according to the project brief rather than a fixed package. Seeing the design in drawings or 3D first also helps families and teams agree early.

Common questions

How do I start with shops & showrooms?

Share your property type, rough area, location and what you want from the space. A first conversation on WhatsApp or through the contact page is enough to begin.

How long does a project take?

It depends on the size, the scope and how quickly decisions are made. Timelines are discussed and agreed once the brief and scope are clear.

Can the design fit my budget?

Yes. The budget range is discussed at the start so that layouts, materials and finishes are chosen with it in mind, and trade-offs are explained openly.

Will I see the design before work starts?

Yes. Plans, material choices and, where needed, 3D visuals are reviewed with you before anything is executed on site.
