IN DETAIL

Furniture made for your room, not borrowed from a showroom

Ready-made furniture is designed for an average room and an average user. Real homes and offices are rarely average. They have odd corners, specific storage needs, particular heights and tastes of their own. Custom furniture design creates pieces that fit the space and the person exactly, with proportions, materials and details chosen deliberately.

Aatish Joshi designs bespoke furniture for homes, offices, shops and hospitality spaces, working from sketch and drawing through to specification and coordination with makers.

When custom makes sense

  • Awkward rooms where standard sizes leave gaps
  • Storage needs that stock furniture cannot meet
  • A specific look that cannot be found off the shelf
  • A need for consistent design across many pieces
  • Long-term investment in quality that can be repaired or refinished
  • Commercial spaces that require branded or high-use fixtures

The design process

We begin by understanding the use: who will use the piece, how often, what it must hold and where it will sit. A sketch and a scaled drawing follow, showing dimensions, joinery and materials. For significant pieces, a 3D visual or sample is prepared so the client can judge the proportions and finish before making begins. Changes at this stage cost little, which is why we invest time in it.

Furniture types

  • Beds, headboards and bedside units
  • Wardrobes, dressing units and walk-in closets
  • Sofas, lounge chairs and benches
  • Dining tables, consoles and sideboards
  • TV units, bookcases and display cabinets
  • Study desks, office tables and reception counters
  • Retail display fixtures and showroom furniture

Materials and craftsmanship

Furniture can be made in solid wood, engineered boards, veneers, metal, stone, glass and combinations of these. Each has its own strengths, price and maintenance needs. We choose joinery methods, edge finishes and hardware with durability in mind, and we discuss moisture, termite protection and polish or laminate options that suit the local climate and the intended use.

Comfort and ergonomics

Seat heights, back angles, desk depths and reach distances affect comfort significantly. Custom pieces can be tuned to the people using them, which is especially valuable for work desks, children's study furniture and seating for elderly family members.

Coordination with makers

We work with experienced carpenters and workshops, providing drawings that explain construction clearly. Samples, mock-ups and periodic checks help maintain quality. The client may use makers suggested during the project or their own, with responsibilities and warranties confirmed in writing.

A cohesive interior

Custom pieces are designed to sit comfortably with the rest of the interior, repeating a material, a curve or a detail so the room feels intentional and complete.

Custom Furniture Design: what to expect, step by step

This guide explains how custom furniture design works with Aatish Joshi, from the first conversation to the final handover, so you know what you will receive and what decisions come when.

Who this is for

This service is meant for clients whose space needs pieces that standard catalogues cannot fit or match. Every space has its own constraints, whether a fixed floor plan, a tight budget, a family routine or a business workflow, and good design begins by respecting them. With 18 years of experience across homes, offices and commercial spaces, the studio focuses on solutions that look refined and still work on an ordinary Tuesday.

What you receive

  • Furniture concept and dimensions
  • Material and finish proposal
  • Working drawings for the carpenter or maker
  • Fit and proportion checks in the space
  • Coordination until installation

The exact deliverables are confirmed in writing after the brief, so scope and responsibilities are clear on both sides.

How the work unfolds

  1. Discovery conversation to understand your needs, property, priorities and budget range.
  2. Site measurement and study of the existing conditions, constraints and opportunities.
  3. Concept direction covering layout, mood, materials and the overall design language.
  4. Detailed design with drawings, finishes, lighting and, where required, 3D views.
  5. Review and revision so decisions are settled before work begins on site.
  6. Execution support and coordination, with a final review at handover.

Planning, budget and timelines

Good planning prevents most expensive surprises. Decisions on layout, services, storage and finishes are best made before site work starts, because changing them later costs both time and money. Where choices have budget impact, options are explained so you can decide with full information.

No two projects are the same, so fees, timelines and execution responsibilities are agreed according to the project brief rather than a fixed package. Seeing the design in drawings or 3D first also helps families and teams agree early.

Common questions

How do I start with custom furniture design?

Share your property type, rough area, location and what you want from the space. A first conversation on WhatsApp or through the contact page is enough to begin.

How long does a project take?

It depends on the size, the scope and how quickly decisions are made. Timelines are discussed and agreed once the brief and scope are clear.

Can the design fit my budget?

Yes. The budget range is discussed at the start so that layouts, materials and finishes are chosen with it in mind, and trade-offs are explained openly.

Will I see the design before work starts?

Yes. Plans, material choices and, where needed, 3D visuals are reviewed with you before anything is executed on site.
